Implantable hearing solutions
Cochlear implants may be considered when hearing loss occurs due to inner ear damage and is sensorineural in nature.
Bone conduction implants may be recommended when hearing loss originates from the outer or middle ear and are conductive or mixed in nature.
Middle ear implants would be of benefit when hearing loss originates from either parts of the ear, and are conductive, mixed or sensorineural in nature.
In order to be considered for an implantable hearing device, certain criteria would need to be met. Your surgeon and Audiologist will guide you through the process, but generally involves the following:
- Medical candidacy evaluation;
- Audiological candidacy evaulation;
- Imaging (CT and MRI);
- Vestibular testing (balance assessment);
- Case discussion at a multi-disciplinary team meeting.
